Redskins Secondary - are the DBs better this year?
We lost Champ Bailey in our effort to
acquire a top flight running back and signed former local hs
standout from Springbrook HS - Shawn Springs -, and drafted
super FS Sean Taylor. Fred Smoot and Matt Bowen are still here,
and Ifeanyi Ohalete resigned. With potential superstar
Sean Taylor starting at free safety, Matt Bowen is projected
to move to strong safety, his natural position. This will give Ohalete a chance to
play off the bench along with Rashaud Bauman. Joe Gibbs
does not play a #1, #2, #3 CB .. etc... He likes to matchup the DB's
based on the other wide receivers. At times, there Taylor may lineup
as a CB in certain situations. Smoot, with Bailey gone, has been
working out harded than ever this offseason and is looking to star in the
Redskins Defense. The question is will Shawn Springs be able to fill in
for Bailey? I think he will be able to. His health is the most concerning
issue, yet he seems to be as healthy as he has been in the last few years.
When he is healthy, he has the ability to be a shutdown corner that Champ was.
Maybe not quite as good, but good enough.
Overall, yes, i think this will be a much stronger secondary this year,
especially with the superior coaching staff that we will have this year.
I believe Joe Gibbs has done an excellent job finding the right athletes to
add to our roster and will improve the team in virtually every aspect.
